OBITUARY
for John Herman Schultz

 

John H. Schultz passed away peacefully at home on October 9, 2003. He was born on October 27, 1923, son of John M. and Elizabeth (Siemer) Schultz. He attended St. Louis University Law School and served in World War II in the Army in Germany, Belgium, France and Czechoslovakia for three years.


He was married on November 23, 1950 to Frances Adams who survives. He was the father of Jack (Betinha), Jane (Bill) Herman, Joe (deceased 1971), Mary (Jeff) Lacksen, Ann (Dennis) Deters, Jim (Laura), Nancy (Roy) Schmidt, Bob (Audra) as well as 15 grandsons and 6 granddaughters. He is survived by sisters Esther Hardiek and Alberta Schultz.

He was president of the J. M. Schultz Seed Company in Dieterich until retirement and served as president or a director on twenty corporate boards, including the Effingham State Bank and First National Bank of Dieterich. He served as manager of the J. M. Schultz Investment Company for forty years. He was the founder of AKRA Builders in 1974, a member of the Agricultural Economics Board of the University of Illinois and was associated with the construction of The Cross on Interstates 57/70.

In 1950’s, he was responsible for drilling four of the most productive oil wells in southern Indiana, as well as production of oil in Michigan, North Dakota, and Oklahoma.

Since retirement in 1988, he along with his wife were members of Laubach Literacy and Habitat for Humanity in Arizona. They both spent time in Poland and Spain with Global Volunteers, teaching English to school children in those countries. He was a life-long, diehard Cub fan.

He was a former member of Our lady of Lourdes Church in Sun City West and St. Francis Church in Teutopolis. He served for twenty years as trustee at St. Francis. He was a former member of The Third Order of St. Francis and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Effingham.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his son (Joe), two brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held Friday, October 10, 2003 at St. Anthony Church in Effingham at 7:00 PM. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM prior to the service at the church.
